2024/05/14

Taipei, May. 14, 2024 – Wan Hai Lines Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Wan Hai) collaborated with the National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior (hereinafter referred to as the National Park Service) to hold a tree planting event at Taichung Metropolitan Park, contributing efforts to the restoration of the natural vegetation of Dadu Mountain. In addition to dedicating efforts to environmental protection and efficiency improvement in various hardware equipment such as vessels, terminal equipment, and offices, Wan Hai also cherishes and values the land of Taiwan. Since 2022, Wan Hai has initiated the Wan Hai tree planting and afforestation conservation project, collaborating with the National Park Service in eight national parks and metropolitan parks in Taiwan for tree planting and afforestation. Also collaboration with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, National Taiwan University – The Experimental Forest, has resulted in the planting and nurturing of over 600,000 trees in Taiwan. Approximately 210,000 trees have been completed to date, sequestering 2,520 tons of carbon annually. This is a tangible action by Wan Hai to fulfill corporate social responsibility and sustainable operations, as well as an expression of gratitude and care for the land of Taiwan. The tree planting event was led by Chairman Chen Po-Ting of Wan Hai, Deputy Director Chen Chen-Jung of the National Park Service, Ministry of the Interior, and Director Chang Teng-Wen of the National Nature Park Headquarters, with assistance from Executive Director Tsai Chih-Hao of the Taiwan Forestry Restoration Association, and participation from distinguished guests. Deputy Director Chen expressed special thanks to Wan Hai for providing substantial funding and support for tree planting and afforestation. Wan Hai invited local customers, suppliers, and social welfare organizations in Taichung to participate in this event, hoping to expand the influence of tree planting activities through the participation of stakeholders. Participants not only experienced the importance of environmental actions firsthand but also learned about the vital role of trees in the ecological environment. Wan Hai hopes that the planting trees project will inspire more people to engage in environmental protection efforts and contribute to the sustainable development of the planet. Taichung Metropolitan Park is the "green lung" of Taichung, referring to concentrated green spaces in the city center where tree and shrub planting accounts for over 70%. Urbanization has posed challenges to the park, affecting vegetation, causing poor tree growth, reducing the number of tree species, and impacting the ecological balance and aesthetics of the park. Wan Hai will plant 2,000 trees annually in Taichung Metropolitan Park, totaling 10,000 tree seedlings planted. This will sequester 120 tons of carbon annually in the future. The 200 trees planted in this event are endemic and endangered species of Taiwan, including Taiwan Myrtle and Taiwan Red Bean Tree, enriching the ecological diversity of Dadu Mountain and providing habitat for wildlife, enhancing biodiversity, and positively impacting the ecosystem of Dadu Mountain. After the forestation of this area, it will also become a good venue for Taichung residents to relax and learn about Taiwan's native species. Tree planting activities are akin to forging a bond between humans and trees. The growth of trees isn't simply a matter of planting and watching them flourish automatically; much like humans, they require careful nurturing to thrive. As people care for trees, trees reciprocate by absorbing and sequestering carbon emissions for us. Additionally, experts shared during the event that it's important not to casually remove grass around trees, as these can help reduce the risk of trees being infected by root rot fungus. Furthermore, trees thrive better when planted closer together, about a meter apart, compared to being spaced three meters apart. These symbiotic relationships illustrate that no organism exists independently of an ecosystem, underscoring the importance of humans valuing our symbiotic relationship with nature, for a more prosperous and beautiful environment. Wan Hai is committed to practicing ESG sustainable management, implementing the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and various sustainable development goals. In the future, Wan Hai will continue to collaborate with the Wan Hai Charity Foundation to support disadvantaged groups at home and abroad, spreading seeds of hope and kindness, and advancing towards Wan Hai's set sustainability goals, promoting common prosperity with society and the environment, and realizing Wan Hai's belief: We carry, We care.
